Professional Journey

How a Family Discovery Became a Career

The Starting Point

Andris discovered his passion for Riga's architectural heritage while researching his family's pre-war property records in the Art Nouveau district during his university years. What started as a personal genealogy project became something much bigger — an obsession with understanding the stories behind every building, courtyard, and facade in Old Riga.

He earned his degree in Cultural Heritage Management from Riga Technical University, which gave him the academic foundation. But the real education came from walking these streets hundreds of times, talking to locals, photographing details, and gradually becoming an expert on a district that most tourists barely scratch the surface of.

From Historian to Tour Guide

Over the past 16 years, Andris transitioned from being an architectural historian to a practical tour guide. This wasn't a shift away from the research — it was an expansion of it. Every tour taught him something new about how people experience these spaces.

His work with the Riga Tourism Board from 2012 to 2018 was the turning point. That's when he noticed something important: traditional walking tours weren't designed for retirees. Steps were too steep, routes covered too much ground, rest stops weren't marked, and guides didn't explain accessibility challenges ahead of time. So he started building different routes.

The Accessibility Specialization

He's documented detailed accessibility information for over 180 heritage sites across Riga. He created the first comprehensive guide to Vermanes Garden's accessible pathways — complete with bench locations, rest areas, and realistic walking times. He knows which streets have uneven cobblestones, which cafés have accessible entrances, and where to find a quiet place to sit if the pace gets too much.

This expertise didn't come from a textbook. It came from walking these routes hundreds of times with guests of varying mobility levels, listening to what worked and what didn't, and adjusting based on real feedback.

Today at chauffagegillessareault

At chauffagegillessareault Ltd, Andris translates his on-the-ground expertise into content that helps retirees discover Riga's treasures at their own pace. He writes with a clear voice — no flowery descriptions that don't match reality, no pretending heritage walks are easy when they're not, and always with practical information you can actually use when planning a trip.

His goal is simple: help senior travelers experience Riga's Art Nouveau district and historic gardens in a way that respects their pace, their physical needs, and their intelligence. These aren't people who need coddling — they're experienced travelers who deserve detailed, honest information about what they're getting into.
